1986 wedding reception in heavy silk

Put me at an Indian wedding reception in 1986, after dark: hair drawn back into a low bun at the nape with a garland of jasmine pinned around it, a centre parting with a maang tikka, and a deep maroon Kanjeevaram silk saree with a gold-and-green border — heavy, stiff, densely woven fabric that holds sharp creases and falls in thick structured pleats, the broad zari border catching light as hard metallic glints rather than a soft glow. A matching silk blouse with elbow-length sleeves, temple jewellery, a heavy gold necklace sitting flat on the collarbone, large jhumkas, gold bangles stacked on both wrists, hands folded loosely in front. I am standing on a low carpeted stage, three-quarters to camera, chin level, composed and slightly formal. Behind me, out of focus, a fabric-draped backdrop, marigold and tuberose garlands, a tube-light batten and dim guests. Hard direct flash straight on: bright flat face, hard specular glints off the zari and gold, a compact shadow on the backdrop behind one shoulder, and steep falloff so the guests behind sit in near-darkness, with a weak greenish tube-light rake from one side. 35mm night film: grain, warm-magenta cast, halation on the gold.
