Put me in an Indian government office in 1984: hair neatly oiled and combed with a sharp side parting, a pale blue half-sleeve shirt tucked into dark trousers with a pen clipped in the shirt pocket, thick-rimmed rectangular spectacles and a simple metal watch. I am sitting behind a wooden desk, forearms resting on it, one hand near a stack of paper. On the desk: a black bakelite rotary telephone, a glass paperweight, a steel tumbler, a wooden name-plate turned so it cannot be read, and files bound with faded red cloth tape in leaning piles. Behind me a grey-green steel almirah with a padlock hasp, a pale institutional green wall with a dado line, a ceiling fan blade entering the top of frame, and a wall calendar whose printing is indistinct. Overhead fluorescent tube light, slightly green, from above and behind so my eye sockets fall a little into shadow, with weak daylight from a window on the right.
