Put us in a cramped Indian hostel room in 1986, packed onto a metal-framed bunk bed and a wooden chair: some sitting cross-legged on the lower bunk, one leaning down from the upper bunk, one on the floor against the bed frame. Mid-80s student hair, untidy and varied, no product. Indoor hostel clothes in washed-out whites, greys and faded blue — plain t-shirts, a striped tee, a lungi or track pants, one person in a half-buttoned shirt, rubber slippers, nobody dressed up. Around us a wall covered in overlapping film and cricket posters whose printed text is not legible, a shelf of stacked books, a portable twin-deck tape recorder with cassettes scattered beside it, a steel trunk under the bed, clothes on a line strung across the corner, a mug and a steel plate on the desk — cluttered and genuinely lived in. Light it with a single bare tungsten bulb hanging from the ceiling close above us, warm and harsh: it lights the tops of our heads and shoulders strongly, leaves our eye sockets in shadow, and falls off hard so the corners of the room go dark, with a weak secondary spill from a doorway on one side. No flash. 35mm film indoors at a slow shutter, 1986: coarse grain, heavy warm-orange tungsten cast, low shadow contrast, mild motion blur on one person, muddy blacks. No phone, no laptop, no modern posters. Horizontal 4:3.
