Put us in a narrow Indian residential lane in 1986, late afternoon, standing loosely together for a photo after a match: one leaning on the bat, one with an arm around a friend, one crouched at the front holding the ball up toward the camera. Mid-80s hair, sweat-damp and pushed back off the forehead. Everyday play clothes in faded whites, red and navy stripes — plain and striped t-shirts, one bare-chested, shorts and rolled-up trousers, rubber slippers and one pair of canvas shoes, dusty knees and shins. Props: a well-used wooden bat with tape around the handle, a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape, and three stumps chalked onto the wall rather than planted in the ground. Behind us a plastered compound wall with chalk wicket marks, a metal gate, a parked bicycle and washing hung from a first-floor balcony.
