Put us in a public park in an Indian city in 1986, late morning, sitting informally on a folded cotton bedsheet spread on the grass under a large tree: some cross-legged, one lying propped on an elbow, a child mid-movement, one adult half-turned reaching for a tiffin box. Not everyone is looking at the camera — two or three are, the rest are caught mid-activity. Relaxed 1986 styling for each age, a little disordered from sitting outdoors. Casual outing clothes in bright cottons — coral, sky blue and white — printed shirts, cotton sarees, salwar kameez, children in shorts and frocks with canvas shoes. Around us round steel tiffin boxes with the lids off, steel tumblers, a thermos flask, a newspaper and a cloth bag. Behind, mown grass, a hedge, a distant bandstand and other families far off and out of focus. Bright midday sun filtered through the tree above, throwing a dappled pattern of hard bright patches and soft shadows across the sheet, the food and us, with bright open sun on the grass beyond several stops hotter.
