Put us on the verandah of an Indian family house in 1985: styling appropriate to each real age, oiled and combed on the elders with the grey fully retained, crown volume on the younger adults, neatly parted on the children. Formalwear in creams, whites and soft ochres — dhoti or trousers with a plain shirt on the eldest men, cotton or silk sarees with the pallu over the shoulder on the eldest women, padded-shoulder blouses and printed shirts on the younger adults, pressed shirts and frocks on the children, simple gold jewellery on the elders, a walking stick held by one. The two eldest seated centrally on wooden chairs with the youngest child on a lap or at their feet, everyone else standing in a row behind with hands at their sides, every head at a slightly different height, all facing camera with composed or faintly smiling expressions as people of that era posed. Behind us plastered pillars, a wooden door with a brass latch and potted plants. Open shade on the verandah with bright sun beyond: soft even slightly cool light, no hard shadows, no flash, and the garden blown out several stops brighter. 35mm film, 1985: grain, flat low contrast, colour faded warm with cyan shadows, slight vignetting.
