1987 family around the TV on a Sunday

Put us in an Indian drawing room on a Sunday morning in 1987, gathered around a single boxy cabinet television with a rounded glass screen and dial knobs on a wrought-iron stand: some on a low floral sofa, some cross-legged on the floor on a cotton durrie, one leaning against the sofa arm. Relaxed 1987 domestic styling for each age, a little flattened as hair sits at home. Comfortable indoor clothes in faded pastels and soft cottons — house sarees, kurtas, half-sleeve shirts, children in shorts and frocks — with minimal jewellery, someone holding a steel tumbler and a plate of snacks on the floor. Most faces turned toward the television in three-quarter view with one or two glancing back at the camera. Around us a lace doily, a low table with a steel jug, a wall clock with a plain blank face, a framed photograph hung high and a textured distemper wall. The screen is on, showing an indistinct bright grey-blue image with horizontal scan lines and no legible content or logo. Two light sources: a cool blue-white glow from the screen, low and in front, lifting the fronts of our faces and throwing soft shadows upward on the wall behind, and a warm dim tungsten bulb well behind barely lifting the room, with the corners staying dark.
