1986 family Sunday outing around the car

Put us on an Indian residential street in 1986, morning, arranged around a white Hindustan Ambassador ready to set off: two adults standing at the front wing, one leaning on the bonnet, children seated on the bonnet edge or standing at the front bumper, one person at the open rear door. The car is the old upright body — rounded 1950s-style shape, chrome grille, small round headlamps, thin chrome bumpers, a black number plate with white letters, no alloy wheels, no plastic bumpers, no LED lamps. Sunday-best in bright 80s primaries: printed half-sleeve shirts and high-waisted trousers, cotton sarees and salwar kameez, pressed shirts and frocks on the children, large tinted sunglasses on one adult, a cloth bag and a steel flask. Behind us a compound wall with a gate, a gulmohar tree and a neighbouring house.
