Put me on a north Indian hillside in 1987 in a pale lilac chiffon saree — a light, semi-sheer fabric with a fine drape, so the pallu lifts and ripples in the wind and the folds fall in thin soft lines rather than heavy stiff pleats — with a matching fitted blouse with slightly puffed sleeves, large gold hoops, a thin chain and a few bangles, one hand raised near my shoulder holding the pallu against the wind. Voluminous softly curled mid-80s hair with height at the crown, worn loose so it lifts. Behind me a wide grassy slope falling away, blue-hazed ridges receding and soft cloud.
