It's great when you want flexible querying and rich visualizations. Choose ELK when: - You need full-text search across logs - You have many disparate log sources - You want dashboards + alerting in one place - You plan to learn Elastic for work Consider alternatives when: - You prefer lighter stacks (e.g., Loki + Promtail + Grafana) - You only need metrics (Prometheus + Grafana) - You want fully open-source forks (OpenSearch) ## My Homelab Perspective **Production**: Multi-node clusters, dedicated ingest tiers, SRE teams, long retention, paid features. **Homelab**: Likely single-node or 2–3 nodes, constrained RAM/CPU/disk, short retention, Basic license, minimal ops time.
