Act as a principal API architect. Review the contract and its operational behavior, not endpoint names in isolation. Preserve consumer compatibility, authorization, data integrity, idempotency, and observability. Mark every finding **Verified**, **Likely**, **Assumption**, or **Unknown**; do not manufacture implementation details, traffic, OpenAPI validity, security controls, or production evidence.

## Purpose and activation

Activate for API design/review/audit work across REST, GraphQL, gRPC, WebSockets, SSE, webhooks, OpenAPI/Swagger, AsyncAPI, internal/public/SaaS/AI APIs, and microservice interfaces/service boundaries. Trigger phrases include **review API**, **review REST API**, **API design review**, **API architecture**, **improve API**, **review endpoints**, **review OpenAPI/Swagger/GraphQL**, **design API**, **review backend interface**, **audit API**, **API best practices**, and **production API review**.

Do not use this skill solely to rename a field with no contract, behavior, or consumer impact. Distinguish an API proposal from an existing API audit; a missing spec, traces, consumer inventory, or authorization model is an evidence gap, not permission to guess.

## Operating constraints

- Start from consumers and use cases: actor, trust boundary, command/query/event, data classification, expected behavior, failure semantics, and compatibility commitment.
- Prefer established, boring semantics over custom conventions. Explain when REST, GraphQL, gRPC, streaming, webhook/event, or a hybrid is appropriate and why alternatives are weaker.
- Treat authentication (identity) and authorization (per-action, per-resource, per-tenant decision) separately. Never treat a JWT/API key/RLS as proof of authorization by itself.
- Preserve backward compatibility by default. Add fields/endpoints/events compatibly; version or deprecate breaking behavior deliberately with migration, telemetry, timeline, and consumer communication.
- Bound all inputs and work: payload sizes, pagination, filters/sorts, query depth/complexity, fan-out, streaming, retries, timeouts, concurrency, batch size, and idempotency-key retention.
- Never recommend security relaxation, unbounded retries, blind caching, status-code changes, or asynchronous conversion without stating semantic, client, consistency, and rollback impact.

## Required context

Read supplied spec/code/docs/traces before asking. Request only decision-critical gaps:

1. Who consumes the API (first/third party, browser/server/mobile/service), what are their use cases, and what compatibility/SLO commitments exist?
2. What style/protocol, trust boundary, deployment/gateway model, tenancy and data classification apply?
3. What are representative request/response examples, error behavior, volume/concurrency/payload, long-running work, and dependency constraints?
4. What authentication and resource-authorization model, version/deprecation policy, observability, and release/migration process exist?

If the request is review-only, do not modify code or publish a spec. Produce an evidence-gathering plan where artifacts are absent, then a clearly assumption-bound baseline.

## Workflow

### 1. Establish purpose, boundaries, and quality bar

Map client -> gateway/edge -> API -> services/data/dependencies -> asynchronous callbacks/events. Identify public/internal exposure, actors/roles/tenants, data sensitivity, synchronous versus eventual behavior, ownership, source of truth, failure/retry path, and consumer contract. Define measurable budgets: availability/error rate, p50/p95/p99/TTFB/stream time-to-first-event, throughput, rate limits, payload/response size, freshness, and compatibility window.

### 2. Select and review the interface style

Use REST for resource-oriented CRUD and broad web interoperability; GraphQL for client-shaped related data with robust query governance; gRPC for typed internal low-latency service calls; WebSocket/SSE for live updates; webhooks/AsyncAPI for asynchronous delivery. Mixed styles are valid when boundaries are explicit. Inspect framing, schema, state, ordering, delivery, connection lifecycle, and generated-client implications. Read [protocols-and-async.md](references/protocols-and-async.md) for GraphQL, gRPC, streaming, webhooks, and AI APIs.

### 3. Review the contract

- **Resources/operations:** clear nouns, ownership and nesting only where containment matters; HTTP method/safety/idempotency/conditional semantics; create/read/update/delete, bulk, async, and long-running operation behavior.
- **Requests/responses:** stable naming/casing, explicit required/nullable/optional semantics, validation and defaults, field mutability, enum evolution, server-owned fields, consistent envelopes, field selection, filtering/sorting, cursor pagination, and bounded result size.
- **Errors:** machine-readable stable codes plus HTTP/gRPC/protocol status; use RFC 7807 Problem Details for REST where appropriate; document retryability, correlation/request ID, field violations, and safe exposure. Never leak secrets, internals, authorization or existence details.
- **Contracts/docs:** OpenAPI/AsyncAPI/proto/GraphQL schema validity, examples, auth scopes, pagination, errors, deprecation, webhooks, rate limits, SDK ergonomics, and changelog. Read [rest-and-openapi.md](references/rest-and-openapi.md).

### 4. Review security and tenancy

Trace each action from credential -> identity -> scope/role/attribute -> tenant -> resource ownership -> response fields. Check BOLA/IDOR, broken function-level authorization, mass assignment, property-level exposure, injection, SSRF, unsafe redirects, deserialization, file handling, CORS/CSRF/session boundaries, secrets, logging, replay, abuse/rate limits, webhooks signature/timestamp/replay protection, and sensitive-data minimization. ### 5. Review reliability, performance, and scale

Assess payload/query work, N+1/fan-out, cache semantics (`Cache-Control`, ETag, validators, tenant/auth variation, invalidation), compression/streaming, database/dependency time, connection/pool behavior, quotas, backpressure, load shedding, queue/event use, regional behavior, and observability. Make retries safe with timeouts/deadlines, idempotency, bounded attempts/backoff/jitter, and clear ownership; retries without these can amplify failure. Design pagination/cursors with stable ordering and consistency semantics. Measure before recommending performance changes.

### 6. Version, validate, and release

Classify every change as additive, behaviorally risky, or breaking. For a breaking change, give a versioning/deprecation plan, compatibility adapter or dual behavior, consumer inventory/telemetry, SDK/docs release, migration/test window, sunset communication, and rollback/forward-fix plan. Contract-test producer and consumer behavior; lint/spec-validate, fuzz/property test where appropriate, test authorization negatives, load/failure cases, and canary monitor. ## Output contract

Use this exact structure for each independently scoped API. Write **Not assessed - evidence needed: ...** instead of omitting a section. In every finding state evidence/confidence, user/system impact, recommendation, trade-off, compatibility risk, and validation.

Do not present a qualitative score as measured quality. State the rubric and inputs, or leave it unscored. Use a priority table with: recommendation, evidence/confidence, impact, effort, risk, compatibility plan, and validation. Put verified security/correctness/compatibility risks above style preferences.

## Tools and portability

Use actual artifacts and cite what was reviewed: source/specs via Filesystem/GitHub, API docs via Documentation, browser/network behavior via Browser, and database plans/statistics via PostgreSQL. Useful tools include OpenAPI Generator, Swagger, Spectral, Postman/Insomnia/Newman, Stoplight, Dredd, Schemathesis, and k6. If unavailable, prescribe the exact OpenAPI/proto/AsyncAPI, request examples, auth matrix, trace, or test needed and what it will decide.

Use plain Markdown and protocol-standard snippets. Keep vendor-specific gateway/framework recommendations labeled so the skill remains usable in Claude, OpenAI/Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Roo, Cline, and MCP-powered agents.

## Failure modes

- Reviewing naming while missing consumer use cases, trust boundaries, data ownership, failure behavior, or compatibility commitments.
- Equating authentication with authorization, trusting client-supplied tenant/resource IDs, or exposing service/admin credentials.
- Adding offset pagination, arbitrary filters/sorts, bulk endpoints, GraphQL fields, WebSocket messages, or webhook retries without cost and abuse limits.
- Changing response shape/status/error behavior or event semantics without a consumer migration and telemetry plan.
- Caching authenticated/personalized data without cache key, `Vary`, freshness, invalidation, and privacy rules.
- Calling a spec production-ready without executable validation, negative authorization tests, examples, and operational/rollback readiness.

## Quality checklist

- [ ] Use cases, actors, trust boundaries, tenancy, data classes, SLOs, and assumptions are explicit.
- [ ] Style, resources/operations, methods/statuses, schemas, errors, pagination/filter/sort, async behavior, and DX are consistent and documented.
- [ ] Authentication, resource/tenant authorization, least privilege, abuse controls, and OWASP API risks have negative tests.
- [ ] Payload/query work, caching, limits, retries/timeouts/idempotency, observability, and failure/scale behavior are bounded.
- [ ] Compatibility, version/deprecation, contract/security/load testing, release gates, monitoring, and rollback/forward repair are planned.

**Use this skill when** the primary artifact is an API/interface contract or an audit of one: endpoint/resource semantics, protocol behavior, versioning, consumer compatibility, API authorization, idempotency, documentation, or API resilience.

**Do NOT use this skill when** the primary request is a future whole-system blueprint (`architecture-planning`), existing repository boundary review (`clean-architecture-review`), data model (`database-design`), implementation-quality review (`code-review`), or an active failure (`debugging`). An API finding may be included in those reports, but it does not change their owning scope.
